How could my weight, prediabetes or diabetes affect me?

Having prediabetes means your blood glucose (sugar) levels are higher than normal—but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. Prediabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes, the most common form of diabetes. But, prediabetes can often be reversed.

Over 88 million American adults have prediabetes – that’s 1 in 3 adults! Of those 88 million, more than 8 in 10 of them don’t even know they have it. Without taking action, many people with prediabetes could develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.

Over 34 million Americans have type 2 diabetes; 1 in 5 don’t know that they have it.

With type 2 diabetes, your body cannot properly use insulin (a hormone that helps glucose get into the cells of the body for energy). You can get type 2 diabetes at any age, but you are at higher risk if you are older, overweight, have a family history of diabetes, are not physically active.

Diabetes affects every major organ in the body and quality of life. People with diabetes often develop major complications, such as blindness, kidney failure, or nerve damage that can lead to loss of toes, feet, or legs.

Type 2 diabetes is NOT reversible. That is why the CDC has developed Diabetes Prevention Programs, to reach out to those Americans with prediabetes and encourage enrollment in a lifestyle change program.

The Lifestyle Coaches of A Healthy Future Diabetes Prevention Group are here to help you, your friends, and your family reverse prediabetes. See below for information about The Prevent T2 Program as well as a video about Lisa’s journey to a lifestyle balance program.

The Prevent T2 Program

Throughout this 12-month program, participants and coaches will meet virtually to learn and discuss strategies for increasing healthy habits, losing excess weight, and reducing disease risks. Lifestyle Coaches will work with participants throughout the program providing guidance and support. Participants will share personal highlights and work together to overcome challenges.

This CDC-approved program has evidence-based success to:

  • Decrease blood sugar
  • Decrease the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
  • Decrease the risk of kidney, eye, nerve, and heart disease
  • Improve weight management, decrease excess body fat
  • Increase muscle strength and endurance
